Thinking about buying a drone for fishing? You are not the only one. Well, fishing drones became very popular in recent years. And since the demand for fishing drones became high, therefor new drones and new accessories rolled out as well. However, if you want to get into this drone fishing hobby, you probably have lots of questions and concerns about which drone to use and which accessory to buy. So in this post of most popular fishing drones, I will answer all of your questions (I hope). But, in case you remain with a few more, let me know about it in the comments section below. I will answer them for you as quickly as I can.
Drone Fishing Expectations
But before you start spending money on drones, or even thinking about drone fishing, you must be aware of a few things. When people say “Drone Fishing”, it doesn’t mean that the drone will be catching fish for you! In my recent post of the truth about drone fishing, I explained in details what you should be expecting from fishing drones, and more importantly, what you should not be expecting from fishing drones. So before I start listing the most important fishing drones, make sure you understand that completely.
Best vs Most Popular Fishing Drones
In contrary to our post about the best fishing drones, in this post, I will concentrate on what anglers mostly use when they go out fishing.
Let me explain it this way before you buy a drone for fishing. You need to consider a few things which will have a great impact on which drone to buy. You need to concentrate on:
- Wher are you planning to fish with the drone (Lakes, Beach, and etc)
- Your budget. is it 500$, a 1000$, or is it 2,000$.
- Drone safety.
- The ease of use in order to operate both your drone and your fishing tackle.
You need to decide which one is more important for you. No one else should decide it for you. And another thing to remember is that this is not the best of fishing drones list. I mean the goal here is not to compare and find the best drone for fishing. It is more the one which most people currently prefer to use for fishing. And of course, help you decide which one will fit your needs at the moment.
Most Popular Fishing Drones – The List
When searching on Google for fishing drones, you will mostly find the following drones:
- SplashDrone 3+ by SwellPro
- Phantom 4 by DJI
- Phantom 3 by DJI
- Mavic Pro by DJI
- Revo 4 by Cuta-Copter
In the last couple of years, when people speak about fishing drones, the first name that comes up is the SplashDrone 3+ by SwellPro. Hence, the first drone in this most popular fishing drones list is the SplashDrone 3+. One thing to remember is that the SplashDrone 3+ is a modular platform for waterproof drones. So that means that the SplashDrone 3+ is not only great for fishing. But, you can also use it for search and rescue operations, for boating, and also for filming.
What so good about the SplashDrone 3+ is that it was originally designed for fishing. That means the drone has everything you need for that particular task. You can dunk it into the water, you can land it on the water, you can drop baits with it, look for fish using its camera, record videos, and many other things as well.
The SplashDrone 3+ is basically the best drone for fishing. You can find thousands of anglers that already are using this drone for fishing. A great advantage of the SplashDrone 3+ is the upgrades that SwellPro is making for this drone. For example, their last upgrade was the power button, an upgrade all the SplashDrone 3+ owners were glad to hear about.
Another great feature of the SplashDrone 3+ is the night vision camera it has. That means you can go out fishing at night with no problem. Seeing where the fish are even at total darkness. How cool is that?
The reasons anglers are buying the SplashDrone 3+ are since the drone is waterproof, it floats on the water, flips in the water, supports night fishing, and it has native accessories for fishing. It brings the anglers a piece of mind when using it for fishing.
Phantom 4 by DJI
The second drone on this most popular fishing drones is the Phantom 4 by DJI. Now, DJI is the biggest manufacturer of drones. Their drones are great, affordable and easy to use. The great thing about the Phantom 4 is its huge community. That means you can find an answer to every question or problem you will have with the drone. In addition, there are lots of fishing accessories for the drone. Keep in mind that these accessories are not native to the drone – they weren’t made by DJI.
Another important thing to remember, the Phantom 4 drone is already discontinued by DJI. So, if you want to buy this drone for fishing, you will have 2 options. One will be to find it on stores that have it in stock. Second, is to buy a used one. Both options are still available.
The reasons anglers buy the Phantom 4 are since the drone is easy to use, it has a great mobile app, and lots of features.
Phantom 3 by DJI
The Phantom 3 is another great drone for fishing. It is very similar to the Phantom 4. And as far as I know, it is the most popular fishing drone which anglers are using. In regards to fishing, there is not much of a difference between the Phantom 3 and the Phantom 4. However, price-wise, the Phantom 3 is much cheaper than the Phantom 4. You can’t find a new Phantom 3 for sale, however, you can find many used ones. The Phantom 3 has many fishing accessories – not like the Phantom 4, but still, you can find whatever you need for it.
Most of the anglers have the Phantom 3 since it is cheaper, and they begin with it as a beginner drone’ pilot. You will fall in love with this drone very fast. And you will also find yourself accomplishing your fishing tasks with it very easy.
For comparison purposes only, the budget you need to begin with the Phantom 3 will be around 600$. While fishing with the SplashDrone 3+ or the Phantom 4 will be around the 1500$.
Mavic Pro by DJI
The fourth drone on the most popular fishing drones list is the Mavic Pro by DJI. Well, I told you that DJI is the biggest manufacturer for drones, Right? So, you shouldn’t be surprised to see another drone of them on this list again. The Mavic is a lesser better option than the Phantom, and probably anglers are using this drone for fishing since they already have it before. And they don’t want to spend more money on another drone. Honestly, if I had to choose a drone for fishing, the Mavic would have been at the bottom of my list. Don’t get me wrong, the Mavic Pro is a wonderful drone. It is very popular among many people (not anglers), and it is popular for many good reasons.
Revo 4 by Cuta-Copter
The last drone in this most popular fishing drones is the Revo 4 by Cuta-Copter. Cuta-Copter is an Australian company which makes drones, especially for fishing. Cuta-Copter made a long way in this competition and improved their drones a lot. They listen and understand the requirements that are needed for a fishing drone and they are approaching that target all the time.
The feedback about Cuta-Copter are great and they just released a new drone called the Matrix.
Cuta-Copter, as a company, are still missing important features with their drones. The biggest feature is the camera. A camera is super essential for knowing where the fish really are. So not having a camera let you drop the baits in a blinded way. This is somewhere the same as a bait launcher, excepts for the range you achieve.
In addition, not having a camera limits the reasons for people to buy the Revo 4. This is since you won’t have any other use for the drone except for fishing. Most people use drones to film things like their events, adventures, and etc. The camera expands the capabilities of the drone. Knowing that the drone won’t serve you outside of the beach is quite annoying and unmotivates people to purchase it.
Another issue with the Cuta-Copter is international shipping availability. Shipping from Australia is expensive, and the company won’t be able to ship it with the remote controller and its battery. So keep in mind all of these things before you decide to buy it.
So far, I listed only the most popular fishing drones in the market today. There are other drones that anglers are using for fishing but it is quite rare compared to these 5 drones I have just listed. Other drones are the IDEAFLY and Bayangtoys X21, XIOMI, and I can list many other drones in here.
There is another drone that will show up in the following months, maybe at the beginning of 2020, this is the Mobula by Rippton. If this drone will be successful, I will make sure to let you know about it.
In general, I am very excited to see new fishing drones in the market. And I hope to see this industry grows more in the upcoming months and years.
If I was about to purchase a new drone for fishing, I would start with my budget first. If you can allow yourself around 1500$, I would definitely go with the SplashDrone 3+. However, if you want to begin with a low budget around the 600$, I would go with the Phantom 3. The 600$ would go for a used Phantom 3, and a bait dropping device for it.
If 600$ is too much for you, then I would go with the Bayangtoys X21. The Bayangtoys X21 will cost you around 200$, and the bait dropping device will cost you around 150$ which will sum it all with a 350$. Don’t expect it too much for fishing, but still, it will make the job done for you.
Well, that its all for this time, and I hope you enjoyed reading my most popular fishing drones post. Let me know which drone are you thinking to buy in the comments section below.
Till the next time, tight lines and fly safely.
